Robert Macdonald lives near Brecon, in South Wales but spent much of his early life in New Zealand where his family emigrated when he was a child. He trained originally as a journalist, but interrupted his career on a number of occasions to study painting brfore going to the Royal College of Art at the age of 40. After graduating he started teaching art in schools in London and Kent (Tracy Emin was one of his students) as well as starting to paint seriously.

He has lived in Wales since the late 80's and has become known for his watercolour landscapes of the area around Brecon. He is also an accomplished Printmaker, recently illustrating a limited edition of John Donnes poetry for the Old Stile Press at Llandogo.
Robert also writes reviews on Art for several newspapers and magazines. His work has been selected for exhibition by galleries in London, France, New Zealand and South Africa, and in 1997 the Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery honoured him with a large retrospective exhibition of his work. He is also a recipient of a bursary from the Arts Council of Wales recognising his major contribution to Art in Wales.
