Studied at Gloucestershire College of Art,
Cheltenham and the Royal College of Art, London. Griffin won the Anstuther Prize at the RCA and a prizewinner in the Laing Landscape Competition in 1997 and 1998.
Chris Griffin grew up in the Rhymney Valley, a coalmining region of South Wales and his early subjects can be described as gritty social realism, drawing heavily from the coal industry and its effect on the landscape and miners that worked in the industry. At this time, he used little paint, relying mostly on found objects and coal dust to make images.
In more recent years, since the closure of the mines, he has turned to the rolling landscape in and around the industrial areas of the South Wales valleys for his inspiration and has rekindled his interest in the use of colour and paint texture generally in his work.
Living and working in Cardiff, he is a member of the Old Library Artists with a studio at Oriel Canfas in Canton.
