Alan Young studied at the Royal College of Art, and while a student in the 1960's, travelled each summer to make drawings and paintings in the border country of Powys and Herefordshire, discovering Llanthony Priory in the Black Mountains and the 'sheela-na-gig' at Kilpeck. Over the last fifteen years he has returned frequently to the Brecon Beacons and has exhibited his work at the Kilvert Gallery, Clyro, in a two man show with Robert Macdonald.
His most recent solo exhibition was at the Coningsby Gallery, London, in 2004, which concentrated on his response to landscape in Finland, and included an artist's book of his translations of the poetry of the Finnish modernist, Edith Sodergran, illustrated with his prints. A selection of these was published in the London magazine, Ambit. An Arts and Humanities Research Board award provided funds for this project.
